What you should expect during the therapy process

Our services are provided in-person at our West Loop office, or virtually. Most of our sessions last 50-55 minutes and take place weekly or bi-weekly.

Initial Inquiry

Initial Inquiry

After we receive your email or phone inquiry, you can expect us to reach out to you. At that time, we will discuss your reasons for seeking out therapy and make sure all insurance or payment questions are answered.

Preparation for your first session

Preparation for your first session

After deciding which therapist you will work with, initial paperwork will be sent to you. This will include intake questionnaires, consent forms, and a copy of our office policies and payment information.

The first appointment

The first appointment

    • You will meet your therapist and begin getting to know each other.

    • Your therapist will share how they typically work and what therapy with them may look like, including approaches or tools they might use if helpful.

    • This is a collaborative, two-way process. Both you and your therapist will take time to determine whether it feels like a good fit to work together, and your therapist will also assess whether they are able to effectively support your needs.

The second session

The second session

    • Together, you and your therapist will begin to identify goals and discuss potential action steps to work toward those goals.

    • You and your therapist will talk about what matters most to you and what you hope to gain from therapy. Together, you will explore how you might recognize progress along the way. The most important outcome of this session is for you to feel comfortable, understood, and clear about the direction you are moving in, and to have a sense of how therapy may support you in getting there.

Making Progress

Making Progress (Third session going forward: Exploration Phase)

This is the phase where you begin to explore what has been weighing on you more deeply and work through patterns, experiences, and emotions that may not have felt safe or accessible before. At times, you may notice that things feel harder, heavier, or more emotional than when you first started. This is a common and normal part of the process.

Looking closely at difficult experiences can feel overwhelming, but it often opens space for greater understanding, relief, and change over time. You are not expected to go through this alone. Your therapist will move at a pace that feels manageable and will support you in navigating what comes up.

During this phase, you and your therapist may also talk about the frequency of sessions and adjust it based on your needs, capacity, and what feels most supportive for you.

Resolution

Resolution — Saying Goodbye?

There may come a time when therapy no longer feels necessary in the same way, or when you feel ready to carry what you’ve gained forward on your own. This transition is something you and your therapist will approach together, with space to reflect, integrate, and bring the work to a sense of completion that feels right for you.
